Best uses

Great for adding to herb planters and herb gardens. They also look good incorporated into garden beds.

Physical characteristics

Bulbous perennial with short rhizomes which grows to 0.3m tall by 0.2m wide. Usually evergreen in Auckland.

Flowers and foliage

Narrow rounded aromatic leaves are produced which are good flavouring to add to meals. Small rounded heads of lilac-purple flowers are produced in summer.

Preferred site

Chives prefer well-drained soil in full sun.

Maintenance tips

Mulch annually with an organic mulch to help suppress weeds and retain moisture. Tidy old leaves off as they die and deadhead when needed. An organic fertiliser can be applied in spring to promote fresh growth.

Can be affected by downy mildew.
