Plant Uses Rockery

Best uses

Great for use on clay banks in full sun as a ground cover.

Physical characteristics

An evergreen, perennial, fern with a tufted habit which spreads by stolons. It produces short, arching fronds to around 0.6m in length.

Flowers and foliage

Fronds are narrow ladder-like and pinkish in colour when young. Older fronds mature to dark green. Leaflets are narrow and rasp-like.

Preferred site

Planting in full sun helps to make the new growth redder. It will take moist or dry conditions.

Maintenance tips

Remove old fronds when they get tatty and die back. Mulch annually with an organic mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Each spring, apply an organic-based fertiliser such as blood and bone at a handful per square metre as new growth begins. With the help of a sharp spade, this plant can easily be divided to make new plants.

Pests and diseases

Generally trouble-free.
