Best uses

Great slow-growing palm for a container, specimen in a lawn or incorporated into a mixed tropical planting. Great for screening as it is multistemmed.

Physical characteristics

This evergreen multi-stemmed palm can reach a height of 2m - 5m and a width of 5m+.

Flowers and foliage

This palm produces multiple stems bearing large fan-shaped grey-green leaves each up to 1.5m long. Large spines line each leaf stalk to deter browsing animals. Large clusters of small bright yellow flowers are followed by fruit in late summer.

Preferred site

Full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Will grow well in hot dry conditions and will even tolerate frosts.

Maintenance tips

Remove old fronds when they get tatty and die back. Mulch annually with an organic mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Each spring apply an organic-based fertiliser such as blood and bone at a handful per square metre as new growth begins.
