Wintergardens work wins architectural award

The Wintergardens in Auckland Domain have won an architectural award for their seismic strengthening and refurbishment work.

The Wintergardens are managed by Auckland Botanic Gardens and reopened their Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Category glasshouses in March 2023.

Judges of the Auckland Architecture Awards 2024 said architects Salmond Reed had breathed new life into a cherished landmark.

"One of the finest botanical structures in Aotearoa New Zealand, it has been repaired with traditional materials and meticulously researched sympathetic new materials to reduce maintenance and enhance sustainability credentials. Its faithful restoration will ensure an important part of the city’s architectural heritage will continue to delight for generations to come," they said.
