Our collections are recorded in the botanic garden living collection database IrisBG. We record important information about provenance, location, phenology, pest and diseases and overall performance.
Each plant is labelled with a black plant label with vital botanical information.
We record plant locations and map long-lived species in our database. You can search our plant collections on through Auckland Garden Explorer.
Our collection information is regularly contributed to the BGCI Plant Search for professionals and other botanic gardens.
The Impact of Plant Theft at Auckland Botanic Gardens
Plant theft isn't just about losing a specimen—it disrupts the enjoyment of our visitors, damages our carefully curated displays, and costs public money and time. Replacing stolen plants can be a long and complex process. When a plant is stolen, we must source it again, which involves purchasing, freighting, and placing the plant into our nursery for a quarantine period. This alone can take several months, and that’s assuming the plant is readily available.
If we need to propagate the plant ourselves, it can take three to five years before we can replant it in our gardens. In the meantime, the empty space diminishes the quality of our displays, affecting the experience for all our visitors.
If you see any suspicious activity, please contact our Visitor Centre on 09 267 1457 ext 1, or call the police.
Those caught stealing may be trespassed from Auckland Botanic Gardens.
